<hi style=afpcap>During the Second World War the Boeing Aircraft Company produced many thousand B-17s for operations in Europe and the Pacific regions, with many of these being retired to the southern states for storage when the war ended. Postwar some were modified to perform specific tasks, including passenger transport as the C-108. A B-17E was converted to the prototype XC-108 with the installation of seating for 38 passengers. Nose and tail armament was retained, with the remaining guns deleted. Additional windows were fitted to the rear of the main fuselage of the XC-108 which was used for VIP duties by General Douglas MacArthur. A further three B-17s were modified as XC and YC-108s, including an XC-108B which was fitted out as a fuel tanker to ferry supplies between the China/Burma 'hump'. </hi>
